Brett Graham’s Wastelands (2024) arrives at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, following its debut at the Venice Biennale. Monumental in scale and presence, the work is shown alongside his new video piece Whangamārino (2025), creating a powerful reflection on the impact of land loss and environmental degradation for Waikato-Tainui.
Described by Graham as an ‘anti-monument’, Wastelands is both haunting and hopeful. It confronts the legacy of colonisation while honouring the strength, resilience and enduring connection of tangata whenua to their whenua and taiao. A must-see exhibition, it’s free to visit and on display until February.
